The Malawi beach soccer national team twice surrendered the lead to lose against Mozambique 4-2 in the opening match of the 2022 Beach Soccer Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament taking place in Mozambique.

Playing at the tournament for the first time, Malawi took the lead through Dala Simba in the 9th minute before Nelson Manuel equalised a minute later for the host.

Sandram Saddi restored Malawi's lead in the 15th minute but Julio Manjate scored for Mozambique in the 23rd minute to level the scores once more.

With time ticking on the clock, Gerson Chivale gave Mozambique the lead for the first time in the match before Nelson Manuel completed his brace to give the host nation a win.

Malawi will face Morocco on Monday in the second match of the tournament.
